A Selfless Homecoming for Max
Some stories come full circle in the most beautiful way.
Years ago, our neighbor Karen (the same compassionate soul who helped save Salt and Pepper) welcomed a tiny baby donkey named Max into her life. For 18 years, she loved him deeply and cared for him with incredible devotion.
But life can change unexpectedly.
When Karen became seriously ill, she made the difficult decision to find Max a safe new home. He eventually moved all the way to Michigan, where he spent the next chapter of his life. Even then, Karen never stopped thinking about him. Last year, she began making plans to bring him back home to Texas and asked if we had any connections that could help.
As fate would have it, we were already heading to Michigan to transport the Scooby Crew to Turning Point Donkey Rescue—and suddenly, Max’s journey home became possible.
The Donkey Who Was Already Loved
When Max stepped off the trailer, one thing was immediately clear: this wasn’t a neglect case.
Max is healthy, well-fed, beautifully maintained, and incredibly trusting. His hooves are cared for. His medical needs have been consistently managed. He gently leans in for kisses, lets you cradle his sweet face in your hands, and calmly walks right onto a trailer like he’s done it a hundred times before.
He doesn’t carry the physical signs we often see in rescue animals.
Instead, Max’s story is about something deeper.
Love Sometimes Means Letting Go
Horses and donkeys can live 30 years or more, so long-term care plans are incredibly important. Karen had always known Max would have a place here if he ever needed one.
In recent years, Max had been living alongside a bonded mother-daughter donkey pair. While they tolerated him, they never truly accepted him into their little herd. Despite receiving excellent care, Max was lonely. And Karen noticed.
She had already given him exceptional veterinary care throughout his life, including managing his Cushing’s Disease with a daily half-tablet medication routine. Physically, Max was thriving.
But Karen asked herself an even harder question: Where would Max be happiest?
With tears in her eyes, she called us and made one of the most selfless decisions an animal owner can make—putting Max’s emotional wellbeing first.
A Fresh Start at the Sanctuary
Now Max is settling into Sanctuary life, where he’ll have space to roam, new donkey friends to meet, and an entire team ready to spoil him with affection.
And honestly? He’s already winning hearts!
There’s something incredibly special about senior donkeys like Max. They carry years of love, trust, and quiet wisdom in those gentle eyes. We’re honored Karen trusted us with his next chapter, and we’re so grateful we could help bring this sweet boy home.
Welcome to the Sanctuary, handsome Max. We think you’re going to love it here!
