Izzy's Emergency Colic Scare
Izzy started showing signs of discomfort, so we gave her Banamine and kept a close eye on her. But when she became more uncomfortable, we knew it was time to head to the hospital.
We are incredibly thankful to have an emergency hospital just 30 minutes away with care available 24/7. We loaded Izzy up and headed there right away.
An Ileal Impaction
After Izzy was evaluated, we learned that she had an ileal impaction and was dehydrated.
The veterinary team gave her mineral oil to help get things moving and started her on IV fluids to address the dehydration.
And then came a very encouraging sign.
Just an hour later, Izzy was already looking around her stall for food. For a horse who had been uncomfortable enough to need emergency care, seeing her interested in eating was exactly what we wanted to see.
Keeping Our Horses Hydrated
With the heat we’ve been experiencing, we’re doing everything we can to keep our horses hydrated and comfortable.
They have access to water in their stalls and throughout their pastures, and we also add water to their grain. We even have misters hanging from one of the barns to help them stay cool.
We’ll keep looking for every way we can to help protect our herd from the heat and keep them comfortable.
Catching the Little Changes
We’re incredibly thankful for our team, who know our animals so well and notice when something is just a little off. Recognizing changes in behavior and acting quickly can make such a difference when an animal isn’t feeling well.
We’re also so thankful for our veterinary team and for having an emergency hospital close by that can provide care around the clock.
For now, we’re keeping a close eye on Izzy and hoping she continues feeling better.
