Pickles’ Skin Is Feeling Better
Pickles is our sweet “strawberry blonde” Boer goat, and if you know him, you know he’s one special guy. A few years ago, we learned that Pickles had a zinc deficiency—a condition that can cause his skin to become extremely dry, flaky, and itchy.
And for Pickles, it can become more than just uncomfortable.
When Dry Skin Becomes a Bigger Problem
When his skin gets bad enough, Pickles can develop painful infections that require extra care, including pain medication, medicated baths, and antibiotics.
For a while, we had him on a mineral supplement that was working really well. But eventually, we noticed his skin starting to flare up again, which was a sign that he wasn’t responding to that mineral the way he had been.
So we made a change.
Finding What Works for Pickles
We switched Pickles to a different mineral, and the difference has been significant. His skin improved, and at his most recent appointment with Dr. Avery, his bloodwork and zinc levels looked good.
That was great news!
We still see some dryness from time to time, so Dr. Avery recommended adding oatmeal baths to Pickles’ routine. They can help soothe dry, irritated skin and give him a little extra comfort when he needs it.
It’s just one more small way we can keep a close eye on him and help him feel his best.
A Much Happier Pickles
Overall, Pickles is doing much better, and we’re so happy to see his skin in a healthier place. His care is a good reminder that sometimes keeping our Sanctuary residents feeling their best means paying attention to the little changes, adjusting their care, and finding what works specifically for them.
And of course, we’re always happy to give this sweet strawberry blonde boy a little extra TLC along the way!
