Saving a Starving Horse in Critical Condition: Meet Orion
On August 20, we received an urgent call from our friends at Singing Whale Rescue & Rehabilitation LLC. The same incredible group who gave our resilient foster horse, Mahina, a home asked if we could step in to save a horse up for auction in Stroud, Oklahoma.
This horse was in critical condition, and Singing Whale reached out to us specifically because of our experience with severe starvation and hoof issues in horses. Without hesitation, our Sanctuary Manager, Elise, immediately took action.
Straight to the Hospital
After a successful rescue, we took the horse (who we lovingly named Orion) directly to Weems and Stephens Equine Hospital for immediate evaluation.
Dr. Splawn, one of the expert veterinarians there, estimates that he’s between 16-18 years old. His body score was an alarming 1-2 out of 9, meaning he is severely underweight. At 1000 pounds, he should weigh closer to 1200.
Orion’s bloodwork revealed a high white blood cell count and severe anemia, both correlating to an ultrasound of his lungs that showed pneumonia. The left side of his lungs has an abscess, and the right side is heavily consolidated.
A Touch Road to Recovery
Given his condition, the vets decided he needed at least seven days at the hospital to undergo nebulizer treatments to address his pneumonia. X-rays of his front feet showed that they are severely clubbed and thin-soled, causing him significant discomfort.
To alleviate some of the pain, the team fitted Orion with soft ride boots to provide extra cushion and support. He will need to wear these for around 30 days before transitioning to shoes.
Additionally, he has an abscess in his front right hoof, and the X-ray revealed another one deeper inside—no wonder he’s been in so much pain!
Hope on the Horizon
Despite the many challenges he faces, Dr. Splawn and the veterinary team are feeling hopeful about Orion’s recovery. We are committed to giving him the care and love he needs on his journey back to health.
Every rescue is a team effort, and we are grateful to Singing Whale Rescue for partnering with us to give this beautiful soul a second chance at life. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor Orion’s progress!
