Goodbye Orion: A Year of Love, Care & Courage

Last August, we got a call from Singing Whale Rescue about a beautiful, starving horse who needed immediate help. That horse was Orion, and his first few months with us were filled with challenges—and a lot of care.

A Rough Start

Orion arrived with fluid spread around his lungs and chest. Our vet visited weekly, performing ultrasounds and adjusting medications. The fluid also worsened his foot issues, and he began lying down more and more. It was a scary time—but then came a glimmer of hope: the fluid finally started to clear.

Progress, Step by Step

Orion’s ultrasounds improved. He finished his antibiotics. His refeeding plan was complete, allowing him to eat freely. Quarantine was lifted, and he began meeting other horses over the fence. For the first time, he was starting to feel like a normal horse.

We dreamed of integrating Orion fully into the herd, letting him graze, make friends, and enjoy life as a horse should. But chronic laminitis in his feet had other plans. For over a year, Dr. Metcalf worked tirelessly (taking x-rays, adjusting shoes, consulting specialists, and trying every possible treatment) to bring him relief.

Saying Goodbye

Yesterday, Orion told us it was time. He could barely stand on his front right foot. X-rays revealed severe progression of coffin bone disease, leaving him in untouchable pain. The kindest choice was to help him pass peacefully.

A Life Filled with Love

Orion’s year at the Sanctuary was full of care, comfort, and joy. He enjoyed unlimited hay, special braids and baths, and stole hearts on tours with his striking blue eyes. His last afternoon was spent grazing on the greenest grass, under the bluest sky, surrounded by the love he felt every day here.
